Tambopata Itinerary: Explore the Macaw Clay Lick and Sandoval Lake in the Amazon Rainforest

Reception at the airport and transfer, where you will receive a welcome tropical juice and a brief explanation of the trip.

We will then begin a journey of approximately two hours to the Tambopata lodge. The journey is initially by land vehicle along 47 km of paved road, followed by 17 km of off-road terrain.

The road passes through farms and primary forests. It ends at a small port on the Tambopata River, where our boat will be waiting to take us downstream for approximately 20 minutes to Tambopata Lodge (picnic lunch).

During the trip, we will have the opportunity to observe various species of birds and, with luck, families of capybaras, the world’s largest rodents, caimans, and other wildlife.

Reception and accommodation at the lodge. Introductory night walk to understand the ecosystems of the rainforest and observe and listen to insects, bats, frogs, and perhaps an occasional encounter with a nocturnal mammal. Return to the lodge for dinner. We will enjoy the diverse sounds of the jungle that will accompany our first night in the Amazon.

After lunch, we will visit the “monkey island”, located right in front of our lodge crossing the Madre de Dios river where we will encounter different species such as the family of capuchin monkey friars living on the island and, consequently, we return to the lodge.

After the sun sets, we’ll embark on an exciting night expedition along the Madre de Dios River, flashlights in hand, to spot elusive white caimans resting on the sandbanks. As we navigate the river’s edge, keep an eye out for capybaras—the world’s largest rodents, weighing up to 60 kilos—going about their nightly routine. After this thrilling encounter with the Amazon’s nocturnal wildlife, we’ll return to the lodge for a well-deserved dinner and a restful night’s sleep.
