Choquequirao Trek

You will need good physical condition and endurance.
The route has many ascents and descents, exactly in the Apurímac Canyon, where you go down and then climb back up.

It is recommended to:

• Acclimatize for 2 or 3 days in Cusco before starting the hike.
• Do some training beforehand (climbing stairs, running, or long walks).
• Be prepared to walk between 6 and 8 hours per day on uneven terrain.

You don’t need to be a professional mountaineer, but it is a very demanding hike—more challenging than easy.
Preparation beforehand is the first step toward a great hike.

The best season is during the dry period, from April/May to October.
During these months, there is less rain, better trail conditions, and clearer views.
During the rainy season (November to March), the trails can be muddy, with landslides or slippery sections.
If you travel during those months, just make sure to bring good waterproof footwear and a rain poncho.

The Choquequirao ruins are located at about 3,000 to 3,100 meters above sea level.
During the hike, you descend to the Apurímac River (around 1,500 m) and then climb back up, so there are significant altitude variations.

Climate:

Day: Warm or hot, especially in areas without shade.

Night: Cold, especially when camping.

Possible rain or wind, depending on the season.

Bring appropriate clothing for the hike: short- and long-sleeved shirts, a warm layer, a rain jacket or poncho, and sunscreen.

Yes, the trek is safe and well organized as long as you follow our guides’ instructions and come well prepared. In addition, our guides are trained and know the route very well.

The trail is remote, so there is not always cell phone signal, but we carry a first aid kit and are prepared for any emergency.

The most important thing is to follow the guide’s instructions and communicate if you feel tired or unwell. We also recommend having travel insurance that covers trekking activities.

Don’t worry, it’s not a race.
The guides adjust the pace to the group and make the necessary breaks.
If someone feels very tired, the guide evaluates the situation and looks for the best alternative (resting, adjusting the route, or, in extreme cases, returning).

The most important thing is to listen to your body, stay well hydrated, and communicate with your guide.
