Itinerary
Upon arrival at the airport or land terminal, you’ll be greeted and transferred to Monte Amazónico Lodge for check-in. Then, you’ll head to the captaincy port for a one-hour boat ride to the lodge. Once there, enjoy a welcome meeting with a refreshing local fruit juice before settling into your room.
After a short rest to recharge, you’ll embark on a guided two-hour walk through the dense tropical forest. Accompanied by an expert local guide, you’ll follow our trails and marvel at ancient trees, some over 500 years old. Along the way, you may spot a variety of wildlife, including toucans, oropendolas, macaws, monkeys, snakes, and butterflies. This journey offers a unique opportunity for you to experience the magic of the Amazon jungle within the 278,000-hectare protected area of the Tambopata National Reserve.
After lunch, we will visit the “monkey island”, located right in front of our lodge crossing the Madre de Dios river where we will encounter different species such as the family of capuchin monkey friars living on the island and, consequently, we return to the lodge.
After the sun sets, we’ll embark on an exciting night expedition along the Madre de Dios River, flashlights in hand, to spot elusive white caimans resting on the sandbanks. As we navigate the river’s edge, keep an eye out for capybaras—the world’s largest rodents, weighing up to 60 kilos—going about their nightly routine. After this thrilling encounter with the Amazon’s nocturnal wildlife, we’ll return to the lodge for a well-deserved dinner and a restful night’s sleep.
After breakfast, we’ll walk 3 km through the dense tropical jungle to Lake Sandoval, one of the largest lakes in the Tambopata National Reserve, known for its piranhas. We’ll paddle on the lake and observe a variety of birds and monkeys, including shansho, cormorants, jacanas, herons, hens, cotomono monkeys, monk sakis, black caimans, pichicos, and sloths. We might even spot a family of giant otters, which are nearly two meters long and endangered, as well as large caimans over 4 meters long. Afterward, we’ll return to the lodge for a typical lunch.
In the afternoon we will return to the city and transfer to the bus station.
At 5:30 a.m., we’ll embark on a walk along the canopy walkway, perched 30 meters above the forest floor. This elevated perspective will offer a unique view of the Madre de Dios River and the lush surroundings. From the platforms, we’ll have the opportunity to observe a variety of bird species, such as toucans, macaws, tanagers, and oropendolas. It promises to be a memorable experience.
Breakfast and return to the city, transfer to the airport and/or bus station.
