Itinerary
Upon arrival at the airport or land terminal, you’ll be greeted and transferred to Monte AmazĆ³nico Lodge for check-in. Then, you’ll head to the captaincy port for a one-hour boat ride to the lodge. Once there, enjoy a welcome meeting with a refreshing local fruit juice before settling into your room.
After a short rest to recharge, you’ll embark on a guided two-hour walk through the dense tropical forest. Accompanied by an expert local guide, you’ll follow our trails and marvel at ancient trees, some over 500 years old. Along the way, you may spot a variety of wildlife, including toucans, oropendolas, macaws, monkeys, snakes, and butterflies. This journey offers a unique opportunity for you to experience the magic of the Amazon jungle within the 278,000-hectare protected area of the Tambopata National Reserve.
After lunch, we will visit the āmonkey islandā, located right in front of our lodge crossing the Madre de Dios river where we will encounter different species such as the family of capuchin monkey friars living on the island and, consequently, we return to the lodge.
After the sun sets, we’ll embark on an exciting night expedition along the Madre de Dios River, flashlights in hand, to spot elusive white caimans resting on the sandbanks. As we navigate the river’s edge, keep an eye out for capybarasāthe world’s largest rodents, weighing up to 60 kilosāgoing about their nightly routine. After this thrilling encounter with the Amazon’s nocturnal wildlife, we’ll return to the lodge for a well-deserved dinner and a restful night’s sleep.
After breakfast, we’ll walk 3 km through the dense tropical jungle to Lake Sandoval, one of the largest lakes in the Tambopata National Reserve, known for its piranhas. We’ll paddle on the lake and observe a variety of birds and monkeys, including shansho, cormorants, jacanas, herons, hens, cotomono monkeys, monk sakis, black caimans, pichicos, and sloths. We might even spot a family of giant otters, which are nearly two meters long and endangered, as well as large caimans over 4 meters long. Afterward, we’ll return to the lodge for a typical lunch.
At night, we’ll take a walk to observe a variety of insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other nocturnal animals. Dinner and rest follow.
At 5:30 a.m., weāll embark on a walk along the canopy walkway, perched 30 meters above the forest floor. This elevated perspective will offer a unique view of the Madre de Dios River and the lush surroundings. From the platforms, weāll have the opportunity to observe a variety of bird species, such as toucans, macaws, tanagers, and oropendolas. It promises to be a memorable experience.
After breakfast, we gear up for an exciting challenge activity high in the trees, over 30 meters up. An instructor will provide a briefing on using the safety harness and Zip-line equipment. Feel the thrill as you glide through the treetops. Afterward, we’ll head back to the Lodge for lunch and some well-deserved rest.
In the afternoon, weāll take on the adventure of crossing the Madre de Dios River by kayak, while enjoying the stunning sunset along the way. Here, weāll have the chance to try out artisan fishing in the Madre de Dios River. With a bit of patience, we might spot species like catfish and popcorn fish, among others!
Weāll set out early in the morning by boat to visit the parrot clay lickāa clay wall along the Madre de Dios River where various bird species come to consume essential clay for their metabolism. Afterward, weāll return for breakfast.
After lunch, weāll visit a local family who will invite us to join in their daily activities. Weāll have the chance to learn about their long-held customs and traditions. The day will end with dinner and some rest.
Breakfast and return to the city, transfer to the airport and / or bus station.
