Overview

The 2-Day Short Inca Trail is the perfect option for travelers who want to experience the magic of the Inca Trail without committing to the full 4-day trek. This adventure combines beautiful scenery, fascinating archaeological sites, and the thrill of entering Machu Picchu through the iconic Sun Gate—all in just two days.

Your journey begins with a scenic train ride to KM 104, where you’ll start hiking the original Inca Trail. Along the way, you’ll visit impressive Inca sites like Chachabamba and Wiñayhuayna, before reaching the Sun Gate for your first unforgettable glimpse of Machu Picchu. After descending to Aguas Calientes, you’ll enjoy a well-deserved rest in a comfortable hotel. The next morning, you’ll return to Machu Picchu for a guided tour of the citadel, learning about its history and mysteries before heading back to Cusco by train and bus.

Important: The Inca Trail is closed every February for maintenance. The route is open from March 1 to January 31 each year.

Short Inca Trail 2-Day Itinerary

Your adventure day by day

Your trip begins early in the morning with pick up from your hotel in Cusco; heading to Ollantaytambo, where you will take the train to KM 104, the official start of the Inca Trail. Be sure to bring your original passport, as you will be asked for it at the checkpoint.

At KM 104 (approx. 2,100 m / 6,890 ft), you will start walking along the same sacred trail that the Incas once walked. The first stop is Chachabamba, an important archaeological site in the jungle. From here, the trail gradually ascends through lush Andean landscape, cloud forests and ancient stone steps.

After about 3 hours of steady walking, you will arrive at Wiñayhuayna (2,650 m / 8,694 ft), one of the most beautiful and best preserved Inca sites on the trail. Your guide will explain its historical and ceremonial importance while you rest and enjoy lunch with incredible views.

The final stretch of the hike will take you uphill along original Inca trails until you reach the Inti Punku (Sun Gate). From this legendary viewpoint, you will get your first panoramic view of the citadel of Machu Picchu, a truly unforgettable moment.
After enjoying the views and taking pictures, you will descend to Aguas Calientes, the village at the base of Machu Picchu. Upon arrival, you will check into your hotel.

Start the day with an early breakfast at your hotel before boarding a bus that will take you to the entrance of Machu Picchu. Your professional guide will take you through the citadel during a 2 to 3 hour walking tour, sharing the fascinating stories, legends and historical knowledge that bring this wonder to life.

You will explore famous sites such as the Main Plaza, the Temple of the Sun, the Sacred Rock and the Intihuatana, gaining a deeper understanding of Inca engineering, spirituality and way of life.

After the guided tour, you will take the bus back to Aguas Calientes, where you will have free time for lunch, relax or visit the local hot springs (optional, not included).

Then, remember to report 30 minutes earlier at the station where you will take the train back to Ollantaytambo and board the private transportation to Cuzco, where you will arrive at your hotel in the evening.

This short but unforgettable trip offers a perfect blend of history, nature and adventure, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Optional: Want to climb Huayna Picchu? Be sure to request it when making your reservation: tickets sell out quickly and must be booked at least 4 months in advance (70 USD).
