At dawn, we will be awakened by the howls of howler monkeys, soon joined by the sounds of other animals waking up and birds flying through the red morning sky. We will have a light coffee or herbal tea to start our 25-minute walk upriver to El Chuncho.
The Great Macaw Clay Lick, within the Tambopata National Reserve, awaits us. Weather permitting, we will have the privilege of witnessing one of the most amazing wildlife spectacles: hundreds of parrots and macaws gather to feed on the clay of the cliff, offering a great display of colors and sounds. We will have breakfast while we wait for the macaws to arrive. Mid-morning, we will begin our descent down the Tambopata River to the camp to collect our backpacks and tents. Afterwards, we will return to Tambopata Lodge via the same river and rest.
*Those who wish to do so can swim at the lodge’s dock or participate in adventure activities such as zip-lining, triline, or floating ropes. (ask at reception)
After lunch, we will take an ethnobotanical walk where we will learn about the region’s medicinal plants and see walking palms, giant lupunas, and many other species of curious flora. In the evening, we will take a boat ride in search of caimans on the banks of the Tambopata River, where we will be able to observe them up close.
